Why do I need a Portuguese birth certificate?

Any individual who holds Portuguese citizenship has a Portuguese-issued birth certificate/record. This applies even if you were born outside of Portugal or are a dual citizen.

A Portuguese birth certificate is one of the requirements to get a NIF. If you were born in Portugal or hold Portuguese citizenship, you will need to provide a copy of your Portugal-issued birth certificate. Unfortunately, without this document, we won't be able to put in the request for your NIF with the tax office.
